Whataburger giving away free burgers between 5 and 8 pm on Tuesday
Whataburger, the Texas-based fast-food provider which hopes its wares elicit cries of astonishment from its customers, announced on the Whataburger Web site that they’d be giving away free burgers Tuesday.
Naturally, there are conditions. According to the Whataburger Web site, Tuesday, November 10th, is Orange Night Out, which is exactly what it sounds like. For its customers who “get decked out in orange from head to toe,” (orange being the prominent color in the Whataburger logo) the chain will be giving away a free burger from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Announcement to all Syracuse fans, Oompa-Loompas and prisoners wearing jumpsuits. You’re all in luck, as you could probably get a free burger with little to no effort. But the deal only applies to dine-in customers only.
Our Take
Whataburger has over 700 restaurants in 10 states, each of whom now have the pleasure of trying to manage orange-bedecked burger crazies as they try to get their grubby little hands on the chain’s iconic, big meat sammiches. Only time will tell if Whataburger’s promotion will be handled effectively as KFC handled their riot-inducing chicken coupon bonanza from May–which, is to say, not well at all.
However, to the chain’s credit, Whataburger seem to be putting more restrictions on the promotion. If memory serves correctly, KFC–with a big push from America’s favorite Oprah, Oprah Winfrey–handed out a free lunch coupon and said, “have at!”, which lead to riots and sit-ins.
By contrast, Whataburger is putting the responsibility on its costumers by having them surrender their dignity for the price of a free burger. But hey, what other choice is there? Much good as it that the Dow is surging, there’s still that specter of unemployment haunting the American workforce, along with its specter-child, “I have no money to pay for food.” So what can I say? A free sandwich is a free sandwich. Have at, America!
