Actor says he’s optimistic he can beat ‘intense’ disease at most advanced stage

Michael Douglas said on Tuesday he felt optimistic about recovering from throat cancer but drew gasps when he told a television audience he had the most advanced stage.

The 65-year-old “Wall Street” actor told talk-show host David Letterman that a biopsy indicated that his cancer was at stage 4, which he described as “intense, and so they’ve got to go at it …”

Letterman asked whether stage 4 was a good diagnosis. “Um no,” Douglas replied, according to a transcript provided by CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman.” “You like to be down at stage one … but it has not — the big thing you’re always worried about is it spreading.”

Stage 4 cancer has spread far beyond the original tumor and is usually impossible to cure.

Douglas said he has at least an 80 percent chance of recovery. “And with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.”

“You’ve never looked better to me, and this proves that you’re a tough guy, for God’s sakes,” Letterman said. “Let’s just say … I’m pretty lit up right now,” Douglas replied.

According to the National Cancer Institute, patients with stage 4 head and neck cancer usually undergo surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Douglas told Letterman he faces an “eight-week struggle” and he just finished his first course of radiation and chemotherapy treatment. “It’s a fight,” he told People magazine. “It really knocks you out.”

Douglas told Letterman that his cancer was caused by his drinking and smoking.

He said his throat had been bothering him for a while, and a multitude of doctors put him through a battery of tests in the early summer, but had found nothing.

After a summer break, he underwent a biopsy, which revealed his advanced cancer.

He expressed frustration with the doctors who could not find anything, “because I was on it early in the summer and started complaining about something, but they couldn’t see it then.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Douglas’s wife, told People it was difficult seeing her husband struggle with the disease. “The hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired,” she said, adding that he told their two children — Dylan, 10, and 7-year-old Carys — the news himself.

Imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a stranger. That situation – so bizarre as to be almost unfathomable for most people – is part of everyday life for people with a rare and incurable condition known as prosopagnosia.

People with prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, are unable to recognize faces, including those of friends and even close family members – and in some cases one’s own face.

In this week’s New Yorker, famed neurologist Oliver Sacks talks about his own struggle with the disease.

In a podcast on the magazine’s website, the interviewer ask Dr. Sacks to describe his face.

“My attention goes to the rest of you -  your voice, shirts, your pants,” he said. “I am not very good at describing faces.  You have the usual number of features.”

Sacks also talks about his relationship with Chuck Close, the photographer and painter best known for his large-scale photorealist portraits. He also has the disease and has used it to his artistic advantage.

Some cases of prosopagnosia are inherited, but most stem from brain damage caused by illness or injury, according to the website of the Prosopagnosia Research Centers at Harvard University. Other cases develop after brain injuries or illness.

“One can from this postulate that Hitler was related to people whom he despised,” Mr Mulders wrote in the Belgian magazine, Knack.

Haplogroup E1b1b1, which accounts for approximately 18 to 20 per cent of Ashkenazi and 8.6 per cent to 30 per cent of Sephardic Y-chromosomes, appears to be one of the major founding lineages of the Jewish population.

Knack, which published the findings, says the DNA was tested under stringent laboratory conditions.

“This is a surprising result,” said Ronny Decorte, a genetic specialist at the Catholic University of Leuven.

“The affair is fascinating if one compares it with the conception of the world of the Nazis, in which race and blood was central.

“Hitler’s concern over his descent was not unjustified. He was apparently not “pure” or ‘Ayran’.”

It is not the first time that historians have suggested Hitler had Jewish ancestry.

His father, Alois, is thought to have been the illegitimate offspring of a maid called Maria Schickelgruber and a 19-year-old Jewish man called Frankenberger.

The products were distributed to Wal-Marts nationwide, according to the USDA’s website.

The meats may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which was discovered in a retail sample collected by inspectors in Georgia. The USDA has received no reports of illnesses associated with the meats.

Upon learning of the voluntary recall, Wal-Mart immediately told its stores to remove the meat from their shelves, the company said in a statement.

“Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease,” according to the USDA. “Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

“Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy,” the USDA said.

The products subject to recall are:

– 25.5-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches BLACK FOREST HAM With Natural Juices Coated with Caramel Color” with the number 17800 1300.

– 28.49-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches HOT HAM, HARD SALAMI, PEPPERONI, SANDWICH PEPPERS” with the number 17803 1300.

– 32.67-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches VIRGINIA BRAND HAM With Natural Juices, MADE IN NEW YORK, FULLY COOKED BACON, SANDWICH PICKLES, SANDWICH PEPPERS” with the number 17804 1300.

When Terri Riehle of White Oak, Ohio, went to the hospital Monday morning to be induced, she knew her baby would have an easy-to-remember birthday: 8/9/10. But it was her doctor, Peggy Heis, who pointed out how remarkable it would be if the littlest Ella Rose Riehle was born at 11:12, WLWT reported.

That moment came and went and Terri continued what was an unproductive labor for the rest of the day. On cue and exactly 12 hours later, Ella Rose Riehle was born at a healthy 6 pounds, 9 ounces.

“The baby popped out, I looked at the clock, and there it was: 11:12,” Heis told WLWT.

Rodriguez was arrested and being held at the ballpark early Thursday, police said. His father-in-law was in a hospital with a scrape on his face and a bump on his head.

“There was an incident at the ballpark between Francisco Rodriguez and his family. He was questioned by police and all other questions pertaining to this matter can be addressed to police,” Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.

Several security guards, along some women and children, were seen around the Mets’ family lounge near the clubhouse after New York’s 6-2 loss to Colorado. Rodriguez’s father-in-law had swelling above his right eyebrow.

Rodriguez has had previous confrontations with a team official, a coach and an opponent in his 1 1/2 seasons with the Mets, though none of them reached this level.

The excitable, 28-year-old pitcher signed a three-year, $37 million contract with the Mets after posting a record 62 saves with the Angels in 2008. He is 4-2 with 25 saves and a 2.24 ERA this season.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report released Wednesday did not name the victim but Fantasia’s manager confirmed that she overdosed. A man told a 911 dispatcher that she took a bottle of aspirin and was slowly losing consciousness. Police did not identify the caller.

Manager Brian Dickens said Fantasia overdosed on the pills and a sleep aid but that her injuries were not life-threatening and that it wasn’t a suicide attempt. She was released from the hospital Wednesday, Dickens said. Earlier, he said she was “in great condition, very stable, very alert and looking forward to returning to work.”

The overdose came days after a woman accused Fantasia in court documents of having an affair with her husband. Fantasia was “overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention,” Dickens said in a statement Tuesday.

The 911 caller described the victim as awake and breathing. Family members doused her in the shower trying to keep her awake. The dispatcher told the caller to take the victim out of the shower.

Dickens acknowledged Tuesday that Fantasia had a relationship with a Charlotte man named Antwaun Cook for 11 months. In a court filing last week seeking alimony and child support payments, Paula Cook alleged that her husband and Fantasia had recorded sex tapes.

Fantasia read the complaint Monday, Dickens said.

“Fantasia fell in love with Mr. Cook and believed that he loved her,” Dickens’ statement said. “Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused.”

Since winning the “American Idol” crown in 2004, Fantasia has seen success and troubles. While she’s had both platinum and gold albums and starred on Broadway in “The Color Purple,” she almost lost her home in 2008.

A VH1 reality show, “Fantasia For Real,” debuted earlier this year, chronicling her struggles as a single mother trying to support her family, as well as her attempts to jump-start her career, which has sagged in recent years.

“At this moment it’s too soon for us to speak to how these events will change the show and or if anything will be re-worked,” a VH1 spokeswoman said.

Cameras were not rolling when she checked in and “we are not currently filming but will most likely resume filming in the near future,” she said.
